3 Beginner-Friendly Exercises You Can Do at Home

Beginner movement routine showing chair squats, wall push-ups, and marching in place

If you’re new to exercise, start with movements that are simple, safe, and easy to practice consistently. With just a sturdy chair and a wall, you can work your lower body, upper body, and cardiovascular fitness at home.

1. Chair Squats — 8–12 Reps

Stand in front of a sturdy, non-slip chair. Push your hips back and slowly lower yourself until you lightly touch the chair. Press through your feet to stand tall again.

  • Keep your knees pointing in the same direction as your toes.
  • Keep your chest lifted and avoid leaning too far forward.
  • If needed, sit fully before standing again.

2. Wall Push-Ups — 8–12 Reps

Stand one or two steps away from a wall and place both hands against it at chest height. Keeping your body straight from head to heels, bend your elbows and move toward the wall. Press away to return to the starting position.

  • Place your hands about shoulder-width apart.
  • Avoid arching your back or pushing your hips backward.
  • Exhale as you press away and inhale as you return.

3. March in Place — 30–60 Seconds

Stand tall and lift one knee at a time. Swing the opposite arm naturally: when your right leg rises, move your left arm forward; when your left leg rises, move your right arm forward.

  • Lift each knee only as high as feels comfortable.
  • Hold a wall or sturdy chair if you need help with balance.
  • Place each foot down gently rather than stomping.

Complete the three exercises in order, then rest for 30–60 seconds. Begin with one round and gradually work up to two rounds as you become more comfortable.

Consistency matters more than intensity. Move slowly and stay within a comfortable range. Stop immediately if you experience pain, dizziness, chest discomfort, or unusual shortness of breath. If you have an existing health condition or joint problem, consult your healthcare professional before beginning a new exercise routine.
