SNAP Food Assistance for Older Adults: How to Apply in Your State

SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, helps eligible households purchase food. Many older adults assume they will not qualify or are discouraged by the application. The safest way to find out is to contact the SNAP agency in the state where you live.

Who should consider checking?

Eligibility depends on state and federal rules, household size, income, resources, expenses, and other factors. The USDA notes that special rules can apply to households containing an older adult or a person with a disability. Certain out-of-pocket medical expenses may also be considered under SNAP rules.

Because rules and dollar limits change, avoid relying on a single national number or an old chart. Read the current USDA SNAP eligibility page and let your state agency evaluate your situation.

How to apply

  1. Open the USDA SNAP State Directory.
  2. Select the state where you currently live.
  3. Follow the state link for the online application, office locator, or telephone number.
  4. Submit the state application and complete any required interview.
  5. Provide the verification requested by the state and keep copies of your submission.

The USDA does not process individual SNAP applications or have access to case status. Questions about an application must go to the state or local SNAP office.

What might the office request?

The state may ask for proof of identity and residence, household members, income, housing and utility expenses, resources, and allowable medical expenses. Requirements vary. Ask the agency for an accessible format, interpreter, telephone interview, or authorized-representative procedure if you need assistance.

When food is needed urgently

Some households may qualify for expedited processing under state rules. Tell the SNAP office if you have very little income or cash and urgently need food. For immediate local food resources, the Eldercare Locator can connect older adults and families with community services.

Protect yourself

The official application is handled by a state or local agency. Be cautious of anyone promising guaranteed approval, asking for payment to release a benefit, or requesting an EBT PIN by unsolicited message.
